Top 5 Activities to Do in the Nation's Capital During the Holidays

After the uncommon Holiday season we experienced last year, Winter 2021-2022 looks more promising for spending time and creating joyful memories with our loved ones. If you live in Ottawa, you have the chance to do many activities. In order to get into the holiday spirit, here are some of the best activities to do during the holidays in 2021-2022 and all while being safe.

1. Be amazed by the Christmas Light Across Canada show

Starting December 8 until January 7, 2022, enjoy a multimedia projection show combining digital imagery with a soundtrack on Parliament Hill that repeats every 15 minutes. Dress warmly and enjoy this enchanting event with your family, friends, partner or alone. Let yourself be transported into an illuminated and enchanting universe in the heart of Ottawa. And guess what? It's absolutely free !

2. Explore the Ottawa Farmers’ Market

Get into the Christmas spirit with over 77 artisans and farmers from the area and beyond at the Christmas Market inside the Aberdeen Pavilion in Lansdowne Park. Every Saturday and Sunday, until December 19th, find at this jolly place various food, arts and craft products. Come discover what makes them proud! The admission is also free !

3. Over One Million lights at Upper Canada Village

Whatever if the sun is out, if it's raining or if it's snowing, you can stroll through the heritage village during Alight at Night. This is only a 45-minute drive from Ottawa, and it is definitely worth the drive. Don't forget to buy your tickets and plan your day before going.

4. Time to get your skates on

Ottawa hides many places to skate all with enchanting environment. One of the best known is the Rideau Canal with its 7.2 km track to skate. You don't own any skates? No worries ! You can rent some on the site.

If you are looking for outdoor arenas, Ottawa has many and here are my two favourites. The Sens Rink of Dreams at City Hall is right beside the ByWard Market. After skating in this outdoor arena in the middle of the City, you can take a 5 minutes walk to the market and have a nice warm coffee in one of the many restaurants it holds. On the site of the residence of Canada’s Governor-General you’ll also find a historical skating rink built in 1872. They clear the ice only using pushing machines like they used to do in the past.

5. Take a Quiet Winter Walk

If you are not a fan of the city life, that’s OK! There are many trails you can hike. It is free and you can get in some exercise while appreciating the beautiful landscapes the region has to offer.

There are many activities to do in Ottawa while staying safe. I hope you will enjoy your holidays with your friends and family. I wish you a lot of joy and fun.
