Canada is well-known for its beautiful and colorful fall scenery. It is a perfect time to enjoy and visit Ottawa and join the locals to take advantage of autumn with a mug of hot chocolate in your most comfortable sweater. Whether you’re new or already living in the capital of Canada, here are my top 5 things to do this fall that will make you fall in love with Ottawa. Forget about the routine and watching TV in your blanket, because those activities will make you want to get outside every day.
1. Stop and Shop at Byward Market
This year-round outdoor market is operating since 1826 and offers anything from tea to beautifully decorated pumpkins. Come enjoy fresh products and meet the happy vendors, farmers and artisans. The area is filled with trendy restaurants, bars and boutiques, and it is the perfect way to get to know about the city.
Also, do not forget to eat the purest Canadian treat at the very first beavertail location in the country. They offer hand-stretched, fried wheat dough pastry rolled with cinnamon or your favorite topping such as Nutella or fruits.
2. Go Hiking in Gatineau Park
While the site is technically located over the provincial border, it is, in fact, only 4 km from downtown Ottawa and offers a wonderful scenery. The conservation park is exceptionally well maintained and features amazing landscapes and wildlife.
3. Explore the Rideau Canal
With its picturesque series of lakes, rivers and canals, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is the perfect location to walk, jog and cycling.
4. Try one of the famous haunted walk of Ottawa
This activity is perfect for families and for those who like spooky stories. Cloaked, a guide with a black cape and a lantern will take you on The Haunted Walk of Ottawa, a popular nighttime tour on foot of downtown’s ghosts and haunted history. This is definitely the thing to do for this Halloween.
5. Celebrate the Foodie Festival
Each November, the city hosts 200 purveyors in an emporium of fine wines, confections, artisan breads, etc. It is the occasion to learn from mixologists or craft beer masters.
Additionally, to this event, there is also the Ottawa Tasting Tours that is an excellent way to discover a few restaurants in the ByWard Market. Enjoy four courses paired with amazing wine while hearing your guide talking about interesting historical anecdotes about the city as you walk from a restaurant to another.
On that note, I hope you’ll enjoy fall and take the time to discover Canada’s capital city. Do not forget to check out my other articles and stay tune for the ones coming!
